Combining High Heeled Shoes with Trousers
High heeled shoes and trousers aren’t often allied with each other. The reasons behind this are that heels are known for the feminine and elegant qualities and therefore usually combined with dresses or skirts. Trousers on the other hand are traditionally and historically associated with men and male attributes.
This belief is, however, drastically changing with women not only wearing trousers regularly in both a casual setting and the work environment, but also combining these different styles of trousers with their high heeled shoes. There are, however, some general key considerations to decide on before combining heels and trousers with an event or occasion.
When pairing heels with pants, your main consideration is the length of the trousers. The bottom of your pants, whether they’re jeans or work trousers, shouldn’t be grazing the floor, as this can ruin the hemline of your favourite pair of trousers. Ideally, the hemline of your pants should fall somewhere between the top of the heel of your shoes and midway down the heel, while the trouser leg should hang straight instead of bunching up around the top of your foot. This will happen if the trousers are too long. Also, when your pants gather, they’ll make your legs look shorter, taking away from the lean silhouette you’ll get from tailored pants with heels.
When mixing any type of jeans or trousers with heels, it’s important to appropriately think out the cut, colour, style and length of the trousers, as mentioned above, along with the colour, height and style of the shoe.
To help you get the idea of creating a successful trouser, high heel and event combination, here are some tips on what works well in which scenario:
For work at the office, it is best to combine tailored trousers with a modest heel. The heel looks stylish and elegant, but is modest to show that you mean business and can practically combine fashion with work. An extreme heel or bold style of shoe looks foreign in a work environment and reflects that you aren’t taking the job seriously and are more concerned with your outfit.
Skinny jeans with high platforms are ideal for a night out on the town or a first date, as they represent a low-key, high-fashion statement. This combination can also lengthen the legs and improve posture.
Casual, cropped pants for those warmer spring and summer days can also be combined with heels. Cropped pants have hemlines that fall as high as the knee or as low as the mid-calf. These types of pants are more versatile to wear with heels than ankle-length capris, which tend to make legs look short and thick no matter what you wear with them. To improve the class of cropped pants wear girly, heeled shoes. Heels with pointed toes or peep-toes look great with cropped pants. For short women who want to wear flats with cropped pants, a better option are kitten heels. They’ll appear a bit taller and more slender without having to navigate on stilettos all day.
This simple guide should get the creativity of your inner fashionista flowing. Have fun combining.
